Other things we learn...
At Greenways Academy we believe that life is education and education should make life better, easier and more fun! That is why we include a series of life-skills in our House content. Here are the "out-of-class" learning areas we provide in our system. We work as a team of learners to learn new skills, try new things and embark on great adventures. We are more resilient, more willing to try, more successful when we work together!
Together we learn. Together we explore. Together ideas become reality.
Money is a tricky thing to manage, especially for young people who don't have a foundation from which to reflect on their choices. We have age-appropriate activities to teach kids about money, the value, and how to budget and plan for the future. Whether it is understanding how much they spend, opening a savings account, or budgeting for the future, they need information. We help by providing the concepts and challenging students to learn to manage their money before they get out in the "real world".
We have identified age-appropriate activities in the home that every child, pre-teen, and youth should know and be able to do in order to be self-sufficient in the future. From sewing a button to organizing their personal files to meal planning, to changing a tire. Students will be given demos and offered the opportunity to earn "badges" as they demonstrate the activities (under adult supervision when needed) and work their way through the categories.
Identifying our own needs and addressing stress in our lives is difficult for adults, much less children, pre-teens and teenagers. We help students name and address their areas of stress or anxiety and give them simple strategies to address most issues. If there are areas of greater need, we have wellness services available to students and families.
Know yourself, understanding others and communication skills are vital to developing healthy relationships and build self-image and self-esteem. In this area we teach students how to identify core issues, and resolve problems as they develop strong interpersonal abilities that will serve them well in every area of their lives.
Soft-Skills for Life and Employment
Employers have made it clear that they can teach an employee anything, but they cannot teach integrity. Businesses are looking for "executive functioning" and would rather hire someone they can trust to come to work every day and do their best. That is why we explicitly discuss attendance, work ethic, attention to detail, and other "soft skills" that will give them a leg up in the work force or career of their choice.
